Montana, Big Sky Country…. PDF Print E-mail

….and so much more. This morning, despite the fact that our legs were like lead weights from our 11 mile hike yesterday, we managed to get packed up and on the road by 9:30 AM. Our destination…White Sulphur Springs, Montana, approximately 500 kilometers south on Highway 89.

The forecast in Waterton was calling for sunshine in the morning with afternoon clouds and evening rain, however this morning when we left the clouds had already moved in. Fortunately we didn’t get any rain and as we drove further south, the overcast sky cleared and we did get some sunshine. Montana is beautiful and it has such a wide variety of terrain from mountains to plains with lakes and rivers throughout the state. The northern section of Hwy 89 twisted and turned around mountains and forests which led us through a huge area that was recently devastated by a forest fire. It was very startling to see acres of charred trees after having come through a colourful, dense area in full fall colours.

We drove through rolling hills, passed by deserted silver mines and coasted by one ranch after another. I felt like putting on my jeans and cowboy boots! We arrived at the Conestoga Campground, an RPI park in White Sulphur Springs. We have full hookups and a view of the Rocky Mountains and we are paying $8.00 a night, a pretty good price.

Our legs are sore as hell and as I write this I feel like I am on a rocking boat, apparently a little motion thing going on. We’ll be here for a couple of days (mostly to rest) and then we’ll continue on our trek south. We NEED the rest!
