may 20-07.jpgAmish Country closes up tighter than a drum on Sundays; it is a day of rest and a family day so not an area to do much exploring in. As a result we decided to venture to places outside of the area today.

This morning we all slept in; after our extensive shopping day yesterday, we were exhausted (who would know that shopping was such an energy drain?) and none of us were in a hurry to get going. The weather was great yesterday and we were hoping we would have a repeat of it again today. Though it was sunny when we first got up, the clouds moved in as forecasted and the temperatures peaked at 19°C (66°F) but it was still a good driving day.

We aimed for Elkhart and ended up going to Mishawaka and South Bend, to the west of Elkhart instead. Mishawaka adjoins South Bend which is the home of the famed Notre Dame University and both cities have plenty of activity on Sundays. Had we wanted to we could have shopped to our hearts delight but instead we drove to Winona Lake to walk around the scenic Village at Winona. There we had hoped to see the Winona Cup sailboat Regatta but by the time we arrived it was either winding down or over because we didn’t see any sailboats at all. The cute little shops were closed but we stopped for refreshments at the Boathouse Restaurant.

This evening we relaxed back at the Moho snacking on the assortment of cheeses and pickles we purchased yesterday at the Deutsch Kase Haus (German Cheese Factory). Tomorrow we will be up at the crack of dawn and Chris and Fred will be heading back to Ontario so it will be an early night for all of us. This is a picture I took yesterday while we were in Shipshewana of two horses, each pulling a buggy tied up behind the Yoder’s Shopping Center.
