Competitors from all over the world attend the North Island Logger Sports, an annual event and it draws a large crowd of spectators to Campbell River every time. We watched as young men from Britain, Belgium, The US and Canada chopped stumps, climbed 90-foot poles and raced over floating logs with heavy cables in hand (to complete a task familiar to a logger, but unfamiliar to me!).
In the log rolling competition, where a person balances on a log floating in water, there were both male and female participants. These competitions were a real test of human strength and endurance and all the competitors made it look so easy. During a break between events, one of the organizers entertained the crowd by climbing one of the 90-foot poles and performing a comedic balancing act where at the end he feigned falling. He was very funny and he had the crowd's full attention. After the show was over we browsed through the booths which varied from food to tools to crafts while being entertained by a live band. We had a good afternoon. After dinner we walked out to the waterfront where we took pleasure in a beautiful sunset complete with a huge sundog. The weather has improved immensely and we are expecting several days of warm sunshine, which we will do our best to enjoy!
