Every Sunday Campbell River hosts The Pier Street Farmers' Market from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM and being the market hounds that we are, we wanted to explore it. We were up early and headed into town so that we could get there before the selection of produce was picked over. We were hoping that there would be a vendor with fresh fish and perhaps another with local fruit, but we were disappointed. There were several booths with wonderful, fresh, local vegetables, several crafts vendors and even some bakers with delicious wares and even though there were no fish we managed to buy something.

The market is adjacent to the Discovery Pier so after we made our purchases we walked out onto the pier. There were several local fishermen trying their luck to catch a big salmon but again we heard that they are somewhat elusive this year. We stopped to talk with one of them and he shared some facts with us. Tyee, a word we'd seen and heard in a few places around here, is the term used to describe a Spring Salmon over 30lbs. in weight. Spring Salmon are also referred to as King Salmon, mainly by Americans and all are Chinooks.

The things we learn from the locals...only to find out our "local" moved here from Parry Sound five years ago! We have learned that there are many "transplants" on this island from all over Canada. It seems they come here on vacation at some point and fall in love with the climate and scenery and when the time is right they come back to stay. In the past two and a half months, we have found that the islanders that are actually born here are greatly outnumbered by people who migrate here. Based on what we have experienced, I can certainly understand why! Wink
