It was so peaceful camping at Brantley Lake that it was hard to leave there this morning. We slept so soundly with the exception of an early morning call by the local coyotes while it was still dark... a sound I love to hear. Because we are still mentally in the central time zone, we were up early and on the road before 9:00 AM. We were heading north on 285 then west on 70 and 380 from Roswell through an array of mountain ranges, plains and deserts on our way to Arizona.

We were driving through some of the legendary "Billy The Kid" territory. The landscape is so diverse; it was easy to see why it was popular with the outlaws in the days of old. We stopped in Capitan for lunch at the restaurant with the most cars in the parking lot, the Smokey Bear Restaurant and Motel, a local favourite. It seems Capitan is the home of Smokey Bear which the locals filled us in about. From there we went through The Valley of Fires Recreation Area, one of the youngest lava flows in the continental US, a stunning sight.
 
We had thought we would stay in San Antonio or Socorro, New Mexico for the night but we couldn't find a nice RV park so we continued on into Arizona. We have parked for the night at the Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area in Show Low, Arizona. It was dusk when we arrived, but from what we have seen, it is a beautiful park so we may stay here for a couple of nights.
 
The two cats are great travellers as you can see by the picture of them taken this afternoon while we were driving. Smile
