When we arrived here on the island back in early June, all the vegetation was a lush green but now it has evolved into a dry yellow. Despite the overcast, cool weather of the past week, we have received very little moisture, certainly not enough. There is a fire ban in effect for obvious reasons and it amazes me when we drive anywhere how mindless some people can be. Without fail, I always see someone flick a lit cigarette butt out of his or her car window, showing no regard for the possible outcome of that action. One spark could easily change the landscape here very quickly.Wake up smokers!
Because we are here for so long, we bought an annual pass at Butchart Gardens in June. This famous island monument is not subject to the watering restriction and it is like an oasis in the middle of the desert. For the price of $38 each for 12 months we have access to the gardens as often as we like. A person doesn't have to be a garden lover to appreciate the beauty there and today, the place was very busy. The changes are stunning and we enjoy seeing the differences each time we go. As long as we are at this end of the island it is a great way to spend a couple of hours and in the fall it should be quieter. We have been told it is gorgeous in the winter when they decorate it for Christmas, so we will make an effort to get over here then too.

The residents at Weir's Beach RV Park were having a potluck dinner tonight so that we could meet each other in a social setting. Because this campground is an "adult only" park, it is a lot quieter than most and for some reason, there doesn't seem to be much socializing. We attended the event with a Shrimp Greek Salad in hand and a couple of lawn chairs. There was an interesting mix of people there; we enjoyed some great food and it was a nice change to get together with them.
